In 1908, Guysborough native Henry Marshall Tory, president of the fledgling University of Alberta, declared: "The modern state university has sprung from a demand on the part of the people themselves ... The people demand that knowledge shall not be the concern of scholars alone. The uplifting of the whole people shall be its final goal." Tory shared a common conviction with that of University of Wisconsin President, Charles Van Hise, who had, in 1904, announced that he would "never be content until the beneficient influence of the University reaches every home in the state", a program that later became known as 'The Wisconsin Idea'. The same spirit is echoed in Msgr. Moses Coady's appeal for the little man to become "masters of their own destiny".
The Institute will commission and present reviews to the public of high quality publications related to the historical and contemporary situation of the Maritime Provinces. By inviting both established and emerging scholars to assess newly-published material, it is our hope that the "Reviews" section will not only provide the reader with an informative synopsis, but also entice the reader to engage critically with the ideas presented within its pages.
